HEY, OBAMA, WHERE'S YOUR MAMA?

OBAMA, WHERE’S YO MAMA?

Having been watching the Democrats get into issues that have little to do with the issues Americans care about (Bill Clinton’s dancing abilities!!), I have a question that no one has even approached. Why isn’t Obama giving his White Mama any recognition. I think it’s pretty amazing that we have a woman and an African American running for office. And, I will vote for one of them. (You will have to stick pins in my eyes to vote for a Republican.) But, Obama was raised by his Caucasian mother and her Caucasion parents in Hawaii, of all places. The percentage of blacks in Hawaii is pretty low. (According to the 2001 US Census bureau, only 22,000 African Americans in all of Hawaii – and it was a lot lower when Obama was living there.)

His upbringing was not in the African American community. He was, for most practical purposes, raised White. And, now, he is only Black. Where was his father when he was growing up – nowhere near him.

Now, Obama can identify with his Black heritage. That’s fine with me. But, does he EVER, EVER give his mother, who is certainly at least partially responsible for his success, any credit or even any mention. If he has, I sure haven’t heard it. He gives Oprah more recognition than his own mother.

Shame on you Senator. Who is really pulling the race card here. If you are going to bring us together, don’t divide us along race lines. That has gone on far too long already. You have a marvelous opportunity to make all the difference – please do it.

Dear Ms Know It All: when your blog title said "provocative," you really mean it! Your topic is a sticky one, though I agree with the premise.

Actually, I think both of the leading Democratic candidates are leveraging their "protected class" status as a way to win votes.

'First woman president!!'
'First black president!!'

I call it "victory of the adjective."

What ever happened to the concept of 'May the best man win!"??? [apologies for the unintended sexism of the statement]. A sad truth is that American voters are so gullible and lazy that they won't look past the adjective-of-the-day. Once we get tired of the shortcomings of the first black/woman president, American voters will sweep them out of office in 2012 with their choices of:

'First Openly Gay President!'
'First Hispanic President!'
'First Pierced President!'
'First Transgendered President!' [strong enough for a man, but made for a woman?!?].

I think the 2008 election will be characterized as 'history making,' but for all of the wrong reasons. That said, I hope Obama wins, so that we can finally prove what we already know... that institutional racism in America is dead. Whiny African Americans [another unnecessary adjective!] can no longer say that America is a racist culture when we have a black president, have had two black Secretaries of State, black generals, black CEOs, black Congresspersons, black professors, even a few black NBA basketball players ;)

So, today and November 4th, vote for someone who can bring us together as a nation; someone with proven experience reaching across the aisle for bipartisan legislation. Our politics are sadly fractured when someone states that they would rather stick pins in their eyes than vote for someone from the opposing Party.

And may the best man win.
